GERMAN COMPANY WAS CONTRACTED FOR DANUBE RESERVE DESTRUCTION!

Ukraine is planning to construct a deep-water navigation canal "The Danube - The Black Sea". The Ministry of Transport of Ukraine insists on pursuing a variant which passes through an the Bystroye Estuary of the Danube Delta, which is located within the specially protected area of the Danube Biosphere Reserve.

The Danube Reserve is part of the UNESCO bilateral biosphere reserve "Delta of the Danube". According to Ukrainian national legislation, law prohibits such activity in a specially protected area of a biosphere reserve. Recently, it came to light that the Ministry of Transport of Ukraine is going to issue a Decree signed by the President to withdraw the Bystroye Estuary from the Danube Biosphere Reserve.

After refusal from Netherlands companies, Ukrainian Minister of transportation Kirpa has contracted for canal construction through the Danube biosphere reserve company from Hamburg, Germany. (Josef Moebius Bau-Aktiengesellschaft)

Their representative has already been out to the Danube delta, discussing the work details. Ministry of Transportation says that the dredging fleet is already heading out to the Danube reserve and that the work will start at mid-May.

We became aware that Ukrainian Ministry of Transportation has
contracted your company for work on Danube - Black sea deep water canal

You should be informed that the planned work will be done illegally and will cause serious damage to the environment. The canal is projected within Bystroe estuary, right trough the Danube Biosphere Reserve, Ukrainian part of the Bilateral protected area. The Danube Biosphere is Ramsar site and a subject to different international environmental agreements. It is a habitat for many endangered species. Ramsar and UNESCO comission that has worked on the issue came to the conclusion that this is the worst possible project for its impact on valuable are and its inhabitants. Minsitry of Transportation of Ukraine keeps pushing for the project, despite strong opposition from Ukranian and international environemntal community. The project has already resulted into international scandal for its participants. Participation in this nature- destroying project will strongly affect the reputation of your company.

Dear friends!
As we told you, German company Josef Moebious was contracted for destructive works in the Danube Biosphere reserve on navigable canal construction through Bystroye estuary.

Their dredging vessel "Josef Mobius" is already at the location. Only a miracle is keeping them from starting the work. First victims will be the last few spieces of Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius tenuirostris), nearly extinct.

On April, 25, 2004, at the marine sand bar near Bystre the following birds nesting were reported: 948 seagulls, 6 gray lag goose (Anser anser), 550 common terns and sandwich terns, little terns, 32 avocets, 6 spoonbills, 8 stilts, 4 plovers, 4 oyster catchers, 435 other birds. Almost all birds are listed in the Red book of Ukraine.

Among other doomed birds - the representatives of International Red List IUCN: 3 Dalmatian pelican and 25 great white, 25 pelican, 25 pygmy cormorant and one pair of white-tailed sea eagle.

We ask you to write a letter to German ambassador in Ukraine and to German government, asking them to stop Josef Mobious from participation in canal conatruction

According to our knowledge a German company from Hamburg, "Josef Mobius Bau-Aktiengesellschaft" has arrived at the Danube Delta to begin destruction of critical nature and wildlife habitat in the core area of the Danube Bilateral Biosphere Reserve.

This activity, with German complicity, will violate at least the following international conventions and agreements to which Germany and Ukraine are both Contracting Parties or Signatories:
- Bonn Convention on Conservation of Migratory Species (Bonn CMS
Convention, Articles II and III-4, 5)
- African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), adopted under the Bonn CMS Convention (Article II-2(c))
- Danube Convention on Cooperation for the Protection and Sustainable Use of the Danube River (Danube Convention, Articles 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, and 11)
- Espoo Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a
Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention, Articles 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6)
- Ramsar Convention on Protected Wetlands (Ramsar Convention)
- Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus
Convention, Germany - Signatory, Article 6).

chyba chodzi o to, że przez deltę dunaju chc? zrobić jaki kanał co zniszczy tamtejsz? bogat? przyrodę.

Może kto, kto zna przyzwoicie angielski byłby w stanie stecić powyższe wiadomoci o Delcie Dunaju. Przyrodnikom wiadomo, że jest to jeden z najciekawszych przyrodniczo obszarów w Europie. To tam gniazduja pelikany, chyba wszystkie europejskie gatunki czapli. W ogóle - ptasi raj. Gdybysmy wiedzieli więcej, to może była by szansa wystosować jakis apel w odpowiednie miejsce, głoniej "krzykn?ć", poprzeć itp. Może Marfu!

Erm... To ja też spróbuję. Może póĽniej dorobi się resztę...

"Ukraina planuje zbudować [tu techniczne okrelenie, napiszę "na chłopski rozum"] kanał nawigacyjny o głębokim korycie "Dunaj - Morze Czarne". Holendrzy odmówili przeprowadzenia prac, więc ukraińskie władze zwróciły się do Niemców, a ci zwęszyli wielk? kasę i już wysłali swojego przedstawiciela żeby dopracować szczegóły. Statki podobno też już wysłali, a prace miały się zacz?ć (uwaga!) w połowie maja.
